Banned from No Fun City!

History is written by the victors.

Before the Kickstarter, before Vol I, TDA had a spin-off strip in an underground zine. It went great. And then it didn't.

Content note: cartoon nudity, crude language, and seemingly the rudest comic ever written.

The Destructive Spin-off

In 2012, while the single issues were still coming out, I pitched a strip to No Fun City!, an underground arts, music, and politics zine in Victoria, B.C. Their first issue promised a place to write "with no censorship, just respect." They liked the first one and ran it. Then they asked for another.

Comic page 'The Destructive Artist: Branching Out', Trevor Burnett 2012: the characters discover they're in a magazine, and get name tags
The first one: "Branching Out". We're in a magazine!

The next one ended with a pair of talking breasts.

The editors wanted to black out the panel. I wanted it to run with some context. It ran as-is, with a blurb from me, and a note from them underneath inviting readers to send in their responses.

Printed No Fun City! zine page: The Destructive Spin-off strip, ending with a pair of talking breasts, then a 'NOTE' arrow pointing to Trevor's context blurb and a note from the collective about the comic's 'problematic use of disembodied breasts'
As printed: the strip, my blurb, then theirs.
"However, if I had drawn a cartoon penis with the line "did someone order a dick?" would we be having this discourse?"Me, in an email to the editors, August 18, 2012. Foreshadowing.

So I drew a comic about being censored

For the next issue I reworked an old comic of mine about getting censored at school. I sent the pencil proof and told them they could okay it or nay it.

Hand-drawn comic page: the characters are redrawn as cartoon penises, complain about being censored, and arrange the CENSORED bars into a giant penis ('Beautiful, ain't it?')
The proof I sent in.

The Verdict

"No Fun City! will not be running your latest comic and we are asking you to not submit further contributions."The editors, October 16, 2012

They nayed it. That evening I sent one last page, as a final resting stone for the strip, and waited.

One-panel comic 'Verdict Pending': Ego asks 'So what do we do now?', Trevor answers 'We wait.', Voice of Reason looks on

The verdict came the next day.

"Please do not email us anymore."No Fun City!, October 17, 2012

In fairness, I had said quite a lot.

Life goes on

No Fun City! has long since ended its run. TDA kept going.
